The kitchen car

Kitchen car A4 was constructed at the Finnish State Railway workshops in Helsinki in 1871. It was similar in appearance to an ordinary four-wheeled passenger coach except that one end was rebuilt to become an enclosed vestibule while the other remained an open balcony. The carriage interior was divided into kitchen and staff compartments.

The kitchen had an iron oven and work surface. A bed settee and table were provided for the staff compartment. A clerestory roof aided kitchen ventilation, and a large crooked oven chimney could evidently be turned to provide ideal draught for the oven fire.

The kitchen car, replaced by a new vehicle in 1916, was converted into a work departmental van in 1918.
