Railway Museum Day 2017

The Railway Museum Day is a cheerful event for the whole family with all kinds of fun activities and a lively railway atmosphere. Experience travelling aboard a steam engine, see a turntable show, have a go at conducting a handcar and hop onboard the miniature park train: the most eventful day of the year suits everyone from toddlers to seniors! The event is part of the Finnish Railways Museum’s celebration of the independent Finland’s centenary in 2017.

Programme:

  • Turntable shows: watch how heavy steam engines turn around with nothing but muscle!
  • The miniature park train operates from 10 till 16.30. Have a tour around the museum park on a carriage drawn by miniature trains. Ticket prices: children 1€, adults 2€.
  • Conduct a hand car. Have a go at conducting a hand car and see how quick you can go!
  • Steam engine “Leena” takes on passengers for a ride in a passenger carriage dating back from the beginning of the 20th century. Leena drives between 10.30-11.45 & 13.15-16.30. You can access the ride with your event bracelet.
  • Diesel railcar "Lättähattu" drives passengers on the museum's track between 12-13. Lättähattu has been refurbished in celebration of Finland's centenary. You can access the ride with your event bracelet.
  • Stream engines “Ukko-Pekka” (Hr 1021) and “Prinsessa” (Hv1 555) operate between Karjaa and Hyvinkää. Access onboard is subject to a separate cash payment.
  • Heritage train “Valtteri” operates from Helsinki via Tikkurila and Järvenpää all the way to the Railway Museum.
  • The Haapamäki Museum Locomotive Association operates the Railway Museum – Riihimäki line.
  • Handicrafts section for children in the engine roundhouse
  • And a whole lot more…  

The Railway Museum Day takes place on Sunday August 13, 2017, opening at 10.00 and closing at 17.00. The event bracelet prices are as follows:

Adults: 15€
Children (aged 7 to 17): 5€
Children under 7 years of age: free entry
Family ticket (includes two adults and children under 18 years of age): 30€

The Museum Card and other discount cards are not valid on the Railway Museum Day.

THE MUSEUM TRAIN TRAFFIC

The Railway Museum Day traffic will be handled in co-operation between the Finnish Railway Museum, the Finnish National Railway Company VR and Haapamäki Museum Locomotive Association.

Take a steam engine from Karjaa to the Railway Museum Day

Steam engines “Ukko Pekka” (Hr1 1021) and “Prinsessa” (Hv1 555) are taking on passengers for the Railway Museum- Karjaa- Railway Museum ride. You can also hop onboard from Rajamäki, Otalampi, Nummela and Lohja. Karjaa is also accessible by VR long-distance trains from Turku and Helsinki and by local train from Hanko. There is a buffet car on the train. Please see the timetable below. 

Tickets are sold directly on the train and by the ticket stalls in the event area near the train departure gates (cash payment only). Please reserve the exact change for the tickets if possible. The ticket revenue will be donated to support the activities of Haapamäki Museum Locomotive Association.  

Please note that during the opening hours (10.00 – 17.00) the ticket prices for the trains arriving at Railway Museum include the entry to the Railway Museum Day.  

Take the Heritage Train ”Valtteri” from Helsinki to the Railway Museum Day

The Heritage Train “Valtteri” will visit to Helsinki during the Railway Museum Day. The train will depart from Helsinki in the morning, powered by the diesel engine Dr13 2349. It is also possible to come onboard from Tikkurila and Järvenpää stations.

The Heritage Train consists of four restored wooden passenger cars from different decades. The Buffet car of Valtteri Train will serve passengers during the journey. There is also a possibility of taking a tour of the saloon car prior during the trip to the Railway Museum and back to Helsinki. Please note that there are only a limited number of places available for the tour.

Tickets for the Heritage Train ride can be purchased in advance from the museum’s web shop (the advance ticket sale has ended). Tickets will also be sold on the train and at the museum area on the event day. In addition to cash, most credit cards will be accepted as well. The ticket includes access to the event.

Take a steam engine to the Railway Museum Day from Riihimäki

Steam locomotive Tk3 1136 “Pikku Jumbo” with its wooden carriages will transport passengers during the day between Riihimäki and Railway Museum. Those coming from the directions of Lahti and Tampere can connect with the steam engine at the Riihimäki station, which will take its passengers directly to the Railway Museum.  

Tickets are sold directly on the train and by the ticket stalls in the event area near the train departure gates (cash payment only). Please reserve the exact change for the tickets, if possible. The ticket revenue will be donated to support the activities of the Haapamäki Museum Locomotive Association.
